________

October 2023

Dear Friend,

Writing this letter is preaching to the choir. You are all so kind and generous to the Dorcas Library. We appreciate every hour and every dollar you spend on our behalf and want to let you know what we have been doing with the wherewithal you have entrusted to us this past year.

Climate change is affecting everyone, including the Dorcas Library. As the temperatures rise here in Maine, so does the humidity. We cannot understate the effects of humidity on a building full of paper. Accordingly, Dorcas Library, with the help of generous grants from the Maine Community Foundation and the Schoodic Community Fund, has installed heat pumps in both the Dorcas Library and the + building. The resulting environmental control will reduce the energy cost for operations and, most importantly, ensure the preservation of the materials maintained in the library’s facilities.

Volunteers have refurbished the kitchen area of the first floor of the + building, which will allow us to offer cooking and nutrition-based classes and fun events like game and movie nights. Volunteers have repainted the apartment on the second floor of the + building, and it has been rented to a local teacher. Dorcas Library is proud to contribute to the Town’s efforts to improve the availability of affordable housing for local employees.

Speaking of volunteers, the Attic Treasurers Sale, Plant & Tomato Sale, Book Sales, and Holiday Craft Fairs were wonderfully successful. Our volunteers held a Trick-or-Treat-and-read event with over 75 little goblins attending. Our wonderful elves installed beautiful lights on the holiday tree for the entire town to enjoy, and the silent auction was a big success.

We held numerous author/speaker events, including author Robin Clifford Wood and her book “The Field House.”  We plan an upcoming talk by Maine author Shannon Bowring. The Schoodic Institute and Healthy Acadia provided demonstrations and lectures for adults and children. One of our volunteers has spruced up the front of the property and planted herbs in the barrels for us. One of our other volunteers built a Little Free Library for us, which has garnered lots of appreciation.

We have continued to host Qigong and Yoga, a well-attended writers’ group, a popular knitters’ group, and a winter book club. There is a children’s story hour every other week. We have held a quilting class, a felting class, healing support gatherings, a special presentation on plants and herbs with Siri Temple, and a talk by Ada Fisher about her experience as an exchange student in Argentina.

And somewhere in there, we managed to loan books, magazines, DVDs, games, and puzzles and to provide computer time, lots of expertise, and good company.

Please join us by contributing generously to the 2023 Friends Campaign so that the Dorcas Library will continue to “do good by helping others.”

Thank you,

Diane Higgins
